Kogi Decides: INEC commences official announcement of results in Bayelsa, Kogi (live updates)

Apprehension now pervades Kogi and Bayelsa as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) begins the official announcement of results of the just-concluded governorship elections in the states. Many reports from participants and observers show that the elections were marred with violence with INEC declaring that 30 of its ad-hoc staff had gone missing in Kogi state. There were also cases of ballot snatching by sponsored thugs while a senatorial candidate on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dino Melaye, lost a nephew. In Bayelsa, observers called for the cancellation of results from some parts of the state owing to cases of violence and other forms of electoral malpractices. Collation of results In Bayelsa, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is currently collating the results for Nembe and Southern Ijaw local government areas at its state collation centre. The decision to carry out the collation of the results from the two local governments, according to INEC, followed reports of violence in the areas. INEC had declared that once violence is detected in any of the local governments, the results should be moved to the state collation centre. Result for Ogori/Magongo local government area in Kogi state The agent of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the local government complained about reports of ballot snatching in some parts of the area. He was, however, asked to wait for the electoral officer from the local government to speak. In his own reaction, the agent of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the collation centre, denied any report of ballot snatching or stealing from any part of the local government. Agents of other parties introduce themselves. Results: AAC – 1, AD – 2, ADC – 4, ADP – 1, ANRP – 4, APC – 3679, APGA – 1, NCP – 1, PDP – 2145, SDP – 244, Valid votes: 6088, Rejected votes: 146, Votes cast: 6234 . INEC collation officer for the local government, Professor Abdullahi Mohammed, says no votes were cancelled and no record of violence. Result for Ijumu local government area in Kogi state The collation officer, Professor Edicha Jubril, introduces himself. Number of registered voters: 59578 Accredited: 20139 AAC – 12, AD- 13, ADC – 46, ADP – 16, ANRP – 40, APC – 11425, APGA – 12, NCP – 8, PDP – 7587, SDP – 223, Valid votes: 19435, rejected: 446, Votes cast: 19881. He reported issues in some areas saying five polling units. In Aiyetoro with 2354 voters, for example, there was violence. According to him, the violence spread to Aiyetoro 2 where one unit had 1109 votes. Result for Omala local government area in Kogi state The collation officer introduces himself as Professor Julius. Total accredited: 24474 AAC – 22 ADC – 29 ADP – 26 APC – 8473 APGA – 12 NCP – 20 PDP – 14403 SDP – 567 Valid votes: 23705 Rejected: 723 Votes cast: 24428 The collation officer said results were cancelled in five polling units including some wards as a result of ballot snatching, destruction of election materials and threat to life. Total votes cast in the affected wards is 2767. Result for Adavi local government area in Kogi state The collation officer introduced is Anjorin TS. Registered voters: 105906 Accredited voters: 66222 AAC – 15 AD – 21 ADC – 27 ADP – 18 APC – 64657 APGA – 49 NCP – 21 PDP – 366 PRP – 05 SDP – 279 Valid votes: 65595 Rejected votes 372 Votes cast – 65967 Results were cancelled in some polling units in a part of the local government because total vote cast was more than the accredited votes. The PDP agent in the local government complains that the PDP agents were not allowed into voting units. He declares that the PDP rejects the votes from Adavi. He is, however, asked to write to the agency and formally complain. Though the agent of the APC claims the election in the local government was peaceful, agents of other parties that participated in the exercise discredited its outcome. Result for Igalalamela-Odolu local government area in Kogi state Evans Ashibuike introduces himself as the local government collation officer for the election. Registered voters: 65129 Accredited: 21428 AD – 13, ADC – 24, ADP – 26, APC – 8075, APGA – 24, NCP – 22, PDP – 11195, SDP – 208, Valid votes: 19812, Rejected: 1047, Votes cast: 20859. He said there were cancellation of votes in five polling units as a result of ballot snatching and over-voting. The collation officer reported that he was told that the polling officer of Odolu was induced with N50,000 to him for the purpose of influencing the result of the election. He tendered the N50,000 saying he was told the money came from an unknown person. He said results from five polling units were cancelled as a result of over-voting, and not because of the bribe. Result for Okene local government area in Kogi state Olanrewaju Samuel Olayemi, an associate professor from the University of Abuja, introduces himself as the collation officer for the local government. Total registered voters: 131166 Accredited voters: 114001 AAC – 10, AD – 11, ADC – 28, ADP – 11, APC 112764, APGA – 20, PDP – 139, PRP – 25, Valid votes: 113170, Rejected: 250, Votes cast: 113420. He said there were no incidences of violence and as a result, there were no cancelled votes. The agent of the YPP, however, said there were a lot of shootings in the local government as well as reports of ballot snatching. In reaction, the collation officer said he was not in any of the areas but the INEC office. He said his report was from INEC officials. The PDP agent lamented the situation saying results were written and sent to INEC. He said the wishes of the PDP and other parties are not reflected as what he has as the result has suddenly become far lower than what was declared by the collation officer. The agent of the APC denied that there was violence in Okene. Kabba/Bunu local government area in Kogi state Professor Emmanuel introduces himself as the collation officer of the election in the local government area. Registered voters: 74789 Accredited voters: 26660 ADC – 37, ADP – 24, ANRP – 05, APC – 15364, NCP – 6 , PDP – 8084, PPN – 14, PPP – 5, PRP – 4, SDP – 364, Valid votes: 23969, Rejected votes: 422, Votes cast: 24391 He said six registration areas had issues. One of them had all the polling units affected, as according to him, after the results were collated and brought to the ward collation, a drama ensued as gunshots were fired for some minutes causing chaos and people running for safety. Result for Koton Karfe local government area in Kogi state Yusuf Musa introduced himself as collation officer for Koton Karfe local government. Registered voters: 53590 Accredited voters: 25793 ADP – 15, ANRP – 7, APC – 14097, PDP – 9404, PPN – 12, PRP – 3, UDP – 4, YDP – 1, ZLP – 1, SDP – 657, Valid votes: 24264, Rejected votes: 323, Votes cast: 24587. Elections were cancelled in two wards with the affected votes from the units given as 1765. reason for the cancellation was also given as snatching of ballots.
